Is anything uploaded?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser using standard web APIs. You can open your network tab and watch — there are zero requests. The page is open source, so you can verify it yourself.
Why do photos contain a GPS location?
Most phones write your exact latitude/longitude into every photo's EXIF metadata by default. Screenshots usually don't, but photos and many exported images do — which means sharing a photo can reveal where you live or work.
How does the metadata get removed?
For JPEGs, Metascrub strips the metadata segments (EXIF, XMP, Content Credentials) without re-encoding, so image quality is untouched. For other formats it re-renders a clean copy. Either way the pixels stay; only the hidden data is gone.
Can it tell if an image is AI-generated?
Partly. Many AI tools and cameras now embed C2PA Content Credentials or write their name into the software field. Metascrub surfaces those signals when present. Absence of a signal isn't proof either way — it's just what the file discloses.
